JOB DESCRIPTION:

A. Purpose and Scope

The dispatcher’s primary responsibility is to answer emergency and non-emergency voice and TD telephone calls for service and simultaneously document the information via written log and/or computer.

B. Responsibilities

Based on the information secured, the dispatcher determines the nature of the call, whether a police and/or fire response is needed. An additional, primary responsibility of the dispatcher is relaying as much detail information to responding units as possible, and to always know the location and status of the responding units. The dispatcher is additionally responsible for assisting with maintenance of all communications equipment; preparing and maintaining required reports, records and forms and performing administrative, clerical tasks and data entry and retrieval essential to the efficient operation of the Communications Center.

C. Organizations Relationships

This position reports to the Communications Supervisor, who in turn reports to the Uniformed Sergeant and/or Chief of Police.

Examples of Duties:

The following are examples only, other tasks may be assigned as necessary.

Answers 911 voice and TDD telephone calls received from the public. Questions callers to determine the nature and location of the problem; extracts and records essential information and give proper advice and/or information to callers. Calls back disconnects to determine nature and location of problem, enters information as appropriate.

Dispatches (via radio or telephone) emergency and other calls for service to the proper agencies and units. Maintains strict radio discipline at all times. Complies with FC regulations, agency policies and procedures in transmission of all radio traffic.

Maintains proper logs and paperwork (computer and/or manual) of all calls received and all units dispatched. Receives and transmits to dispatched field units via radio, updated information as it is received. Notifies other agencies and /or assists units to respond to emergency calls and coordinates their response by providing information and directions via radio or telephone.
Answers non-emergency calls and provides routine non-technical information upon request and refers all other questions to the proper person or agency.

Assists with maintenance of al communication equipment and work environment; prepares and maintains required reports, records and forms and performs administrative, clerical tasks and data entry and retrieval essential to the effective operation of the communications center.

May be required to assist with on-the-job training of new dispatch personnel.

Performs related work as required.
